What is Mesothelioma?

Before we get too far in our discussion, perhaps it might be a good idea to define mesothelioma.  Mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer usually associated with previous exposure to asbestos.  In fact, almost all the cases of mesothelioma cancer are linked with exposure to asbestos particles. The most common site of this disease is the pleura (the outer lining of the lungs and the chest cavity), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or in the pericardium (the membrane surrounding the heart).

The Asbestos and Mesothelioma Connection Revisited.  Symptoms of malignant mesothelioma may not appear until twenty to fifty years after exposure to asbestos fibers; a fact which partially explains why so many new cases of this form of cancer are being reported every year.  What is most unfortunate about this, however, is that the dangers of asbestos were realized dozens of years ago when measures taken to reduce the risk of the disease could have been initiated.

It is believed that even insignificant exposure to asbestos in environments such as asbestos mills, mines, shipping yards, some older Navy ships, or even patient's homes can result in mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Symptoms

The most common type of mesothelioma is called pleural mesothelioma.  Malignant pleural mesothelioma symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, and/or chronic coughing that can easily be associated with symptoms from allergies, the flu, or from a common cold.

Types of Mesothelioma

There are three basic types of mesothelioma.  The most common type of mesothelioma is called pleural mesothelioma.

Pleural mesothelioma affects the pleural cavity around the lungs and is responsible for a majority 75% of all cases diagnosed. 

Another type is called peritoneal mesothelioma. Also known as abdominal mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for 10 to 20% of all cases and affects the tissues in the abdomen (especially the stomach and intestines).

Pericardial mesothelioma is the rarest form of mesothelioma and accounts for 5 to 10% of all reported cases. Pericardial mesothelioma affects the sac and the lining surrounding the heart.

Mesothelioma Diagnosis

Diagnosing mesothelioma is often difficult because the symptoms are similar to those of a number of other conditions.  Mesothelioma diagnosis begins with a review of the patient's medical history, including any history of asbestos exposure.

A complete physical examination may be performed, including x-rays of the chest or abdomen and lung function tests.  A CT (or CAT) scan or an MRI may also be useful.  A biopsy, however, must be performed in order to distinguish mesothelioma from other types of cancer, such as lung cancer.

Mesothelioma Staging.  If the diagnosis is mesothelioma, the doctor will want to determine the stage (or extent) of the disease.  Mesothelioma staging involves more tests in a careful attempt to find out whether the cancer has spread and, if so, to which parts of the body.  Knowing the stage of the disease helps the doctor plan the appropriate treatment.

Traditional Mesothelioma Treatment

There are various procedures used for the treatment of mesothelioma cancer.  The employment of traditional mesothelioma treatments depends on the location of the cancer, the stage of the disease, and the patient's age and general health.

Traditional mesothelioma treatment typically includes the following:  surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
